This is a GREAT post. Well said. Agree with Len Penzo's that there is some sage advice amidst these unfortunate stories.

There are risks in life, and the "unexpected" shouldn't be considered impossibilities - just things that could happen but may have a low probability. But no matter how low, the possibility is still there that they could happen.

Keeping one's head in the sand is never good - staying alert to possiblities, and actively managing risks is a good idea. It can be the difference between being decimated by a disaster or keeping on your feet.

Len,

All of these incidents kind of piled up on me within a very short time. Two of them happened in the same day. My first thought was, thank God this didn't happen to me. Then, I started thinking there had to be a lesson in all of this tragedy. I hope I didn't bum anyone out. ;-)

Hi Bret, Thanks for dropping by earlier.

Pretty sad post! But I agree with your bottom line, some risks should be avoided, but you gotta take the right risks to succeed.

You've really hit the nail on the head! The only thing we can count on is uncertainty. Sometimes terrible accidents happen like to your friend which can't be avoided. I can relate to that with my own nonfatal but chronic health issues.

However, so many times I see people dig themselves a big hole financially, often related to a bad partner choice as you alluded to. I don't see the US economy getting better any time soon so I think it's smart to protect yourself and have a big savings cushion.

My gosh, Bret. Buried in all those terrible stories, some of them heart-wrenchingly tragic, is some VERY sage advice.

It all comes down to the old idiom, "There but for the grace of God go I."

When it comes to staving off financial disaster, I think the best we can do is to save as diligently as we possibly can - and hold on for whatever ride life gives to us.

Well done, my friend. What a GREAT post!

All the best,

Len
